I got inspired to ride by seeing Steve Pavarno whizzing around on his first unicycle. After saving up for 6 months I bought my first unicycle (2nd hand) and taught myself how to ride. I loved the challenge and learnt as many different freestyle tricks as I could. As I lived in Rotorua I tried riding in Whakarewarewa and discovered Muni (more than 10 years ago, when very few people were doing it). Eventually freestyle unicycling took me to Minnesota were I trained with the Twin City Unicycle Club and became NZ's first level 7 rider.
In the early years I broke a hang of a lot of equipment (mostly doing Muni and trials). It was very frustrating having no access to decent quality unicycles in NZ. I had several custom unicycles made at great expense and eventually solved the equipment problem by starting the NZ branch of unicycle.com with Steve and Tony.
These days I mostly do distance riding. I regularly commute to work on my unicycle and have completed the 160km lake taupo race on one wheel. I still enjoy trials, freestyle and downhill Muni when I get the chance.
