From the centre of Nelson head out to Maitai Valley Rd.
5km up the Maitai Valley Road at Sharlands Creek Bridge turn left into a gravel car park area. From the carpark, pedal through the first forestry gate and veer left at the first intersection, crossing the concrete ford onto Sharlands Road.(On your left you will see a signboard for the Nelson Mountain Bike Club selection of trails in Hira Forest. ) Just follow Sharlands Road to the first junction with Bobs Fern Road (about 4km up). It is a very ridable ascend to this point. Here is where you drop in to "Waterloo" for a fun 1.5k of sweet single track.
At the end of "Waterloo" you find the "Sharlands Creek" intersection. From here you can either pop back up to the forestry road and ride down to the 2k mark to find the start of "Willow Lane" or you can attempt the "Sharlands Creek" single track which becomes doc land and is a very technical section.
Once on "Willow Lane" the track turns back into a fun blast down to the carpark where you started.
Please note: That a day mtb permit is required to ride these tracks, which you can get for a local bike shop.
