Most people go left over the bridge and walk up the hill for about 20 minutes. Some excellent jumps and downhill challenges are in amongst the pine trees.
Carry on up the hill as it flattens out. You can veer left up past the pond to some beautiful flat single trail, or veer right and come out at the top of Backs Track.
Backs Track is pumping fast downhill: 100% rideable single trail that zigs through regenerating native bush and pin eplantation, with the odd peek out into farmland. Its mostly rocky, not too slippery, and has five stream crossings of varying difficulty.
How to get there
From Palmerston North, drive out past Massey University along Tennent Drive. Turn left onto Kahuterawa Road (the intersection is a strange triangular thing: check the signposts). Drive almost to the end, about 9km sealed until almost at the end. The car park is on the right under some young pine trees. Ride out across the bridge. The start of the track is sign posted on your right.
Note: this area is scheduled for logging in early 2010. There are rumours of new tracks in the forest behind...
